Create Bookmarks from Headings

Many PDFs have chapter headings but no bookmarks. This tool finds likely headings from their font size and style, lets you review them and adds them as a navigable outline.

How to create bookmarks from headings

  1. Select the PDF.
  2. Review the detected headings with their level, page and confidence.
  3. Include or exclude entries, edit titles and levels, or add your own.
  4. Choose whether to add to or replace existing bookmarks, then download the PDF.

How headings are detected

Text that is noticeably larger than the body text, bold or italic, short and set apart is scored as a likely heading; numbering such as 1.2 helps decide its level. Running headers, page numbers, captions and table rows are filtered out.

Key features

  • High, Medium and Low confidence so you know what to check.
  • Duplicates and existing bookmarks are flagged.
  • Hierarchy is built from heading sizes and numbering.

Supported files and limits

  • Headings are detected from text, so scanned pages without text can't be analysed (no OCR).
  • Documents that use the same style for headings and body text give weak results; review before saving.

How your files are handled

Create Bookmarks from Headings runs in your browser: your file is read and processed on your device and the result is created there, so documents aren't uploaded to a server. The site only counts anonymous page views, without cookies. How it works · Privacy
