PDF to Markdown

Markdown is ideal for notes, documentation and wikis. This tool turns a PDF's text into Markdown and recognises headings, bulleted and numbered lists, simple tables and web links.

Your file stays on your device and is processed in your browser.

How to convert a PDF to Markdown

  1. Select the PDF (password-protected files can be opened with their password).
  2. Choose all pages or selected pages and whether to include page separators.
  3. Check the Markdown preview.
  4. Copy the Markdown or download the .md file.

How structure is recognised

Headings are found from larger font sizes, lists from bullets or consecutive numbers, and tables from text that lines up in columns over several rows. Web links in the PDF become Markdown links. These are careful heuristics, so unusual layouts may need a little tidying.

Key features

  • Headings, lists, tables and links detected automatically.
  • Switching options re-formats instantly without re-reading the PDF.
  • Works with password-protected PDFs when you enter the password.

Supported files and limits

  • No OCR: scanned image-only pages have no text to convert.
  • Multi-column pages may not keep the reading order.
  • Images aren't converted; you can mark where they were with an [Image on page N] placeholder.

How your files are handled

PDF to Markdown runs in your browser: your file is read and processed on your device and the result is created there, so documents aren't uploaded to a server. Passwords you enter are used only for this operation and aren't stored. The site only counts anonymous page views, without cookies. How it works · Privacy
