Split PDF by Bookmarks

If your PDF has bookmarks (an outline), you can split it at chapters or sections instead of counting pages. Pick the bookmarks to split at and get one PDF per part.

Your file stays on your device and is processed in your browser.

One PDF up to 200 MB.

How to split a PDF by bookmarks

  1. Select a PDF that has bookmarks.
  2. Tick the bookmarks where new files should start; “+ sub-bookmarks” adds a bookmark's children.
  3. Decide whether pages before the first bookmark should be included.
  4. Review the list of files, then press Split PDF and download them, or all as a ZIP.

What each part keeps

Every file keeps its pages exactly, the bookmarks that point inside it, its page labels, links and form fields on its pages, the attachments and the document information. Links and bookmarks that lead to pages in other parts are removed so nothing points to a missing page.

Key features

  • Splits at the bookmarks you choose, including nested ones.
  • Each output keeps its own working bookmarks and page labels.
  • Every file is reopened and checked before you can download it.

Supported files and limits

  • Only bookmarks that point to pages of the document can be used; web-link bookmarks can't start a part.
  • Chapters are never guessed from the text: PDFs without bookmarks can be split with Split PDF, or given bookmarks with Create Bookmarks from Headings.
  • Tagged-PDF structure and XFA form data aren't carried over.

How your files are handled

Split PDF by Bookmarks runs in your browser: your file is read and processed on your device and the result is created there, so documents aren't uploaded to a server. The site only counts anonymous page views, without cookies. How it works · Privacy
